Highland Bothy Retreat
3D Cinematic Landscape project rendered in Unreal Engine 4. This project features a solitary bothy in the depths of a mountainous range inspired by the Scottish highlands. The scene focuses on emitting a peaceful and inviting ambience seeming as an ideal place to rest during a hike up the tiresome terrain of the Scottish wilderness. Software used include: Autodesk Maya, ZBrush, Substance designer, Substance Painter and Unreal Engine 4. My process started by creating a believable heightmap for my environment, I took a heightmap from a real location within the Scottish highlands to achieve this and levelled out an area where I could picture the scene being situated. After this, I took to Maya to begin creating my assets for the bothy and surroundings. I also used ZBrush to model some variations of boulders for the loch edge and a stone wall to place around the bothy. I used substance designer for the creation of the materials for the landscape and the bothy, then I used substance painter to add mould and weather effects to the bothy materials and applied the remaining materials for the objects within the scene. In Unreal Engine, I created an auto landscape material where I assigned a mud, grass and rock texture so that the required texture will show depending on the gradient of the heightmap. I applied a wind system so that objects such as the clothing line, t-shirt and leaves to add a bit of movement to the scene . After implementing the volumetric clouds, lighting and post process effects, I set up a sequence using a cinematic camera and produced a short flythrough of the environment and created a homemade soundtrack to accompany it.
